Israel's Prime Minister has instructed the Government Secretary to establish a Ministerial Committee on Renewable Energies and Reduced Oil Dependence. The committee will include relevant ministries and will establish decision making systems for accelerating the development of renewable energy in Israel. During the course of a cabinet meeting on December 13, 2009, Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan called on the government to conduct a special session on greenhouse gas abatement in Israel, upon his return from the Copenhagen Climate Summit. In-depth discussions on the topic are crucial in light of the probability that Israel will be obligated to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions within the framework of the post-Kyoto agreements. Erdan further noted that while the Ministry of Environmental Protection is responsible for drafting a national program on emissions reductions, the authorities and competencies for implementation are dispersed among several government ministries. Although Israel is a leader in research and development on renewable energy, it produces only 0.1% of its energy from renewable sources. The government, said Erdan, must make clear commitments on the promotion of renewable energy, a subject which is of foremost importance in the struggle to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
